SHOVELS TO THE RESCUE January 31, 2010

Want some help ridding the body of unwanted toxins?  Most of us need an extra “shovel” to remove the toxic debris and buildup from the body.  Our environment is a sea of chemicals that can overwhelm our body’s ability to remove them. Recent information by Dr. Thomas Slaga*includes research on many human cancers. Cancer is correlated with body toxins that cause cell damage.  Studies show glucaric acid (also known as calcium d’glucarate) levels are low in people diagnosed with cancer particularly, lung, skin, liver, and breast and colon cancers.  There is a solution to the heavy burden our bodies face every day.

Calcium d’glucarate is a cellular detoxifer that is naturally produced by the liver. It is found naturally in fruits and vegetables however one must consume a minimum of 5 servings a day. Are you getting enough each day?

Happy Re-New Year 2010 January 4, 2010

Filed under: Environmental Toxicity — wellnessaging @ 5:49 PM

Every New Year brings new opportunity to begin again. In health each day we begin again to regenerate new cells, repair cells and discard old ones. The challenging news comes from Harper’s Index which reported in its January 2010 issue that as recently as September 7, 2009, fifty million (50,000,000) chemicals have been identified. What a dilemma we are now faced with. How can the human body wade through this toxic soup?

The answer: it can’t – not without some help. Sooner or later these seemingly innocuous substances have their way. Plastic bottles, the lining in tin cans that store vegetables, household chemical cleaners from furniture polishes to laundry additives (clothes softeners – are the safe?), sprays on produce and the list goes on of various harmful chemicals we take for granted.

Cancer is No 1 killer for people younger than 85. 1 out of 2 men and 1 out of 3 women will have cancer in their life-time according to the American Cancer Society. Let see – can there be an association?

No matter your age, take all the active steps you can now to help your body stay chemically “light” and free.

Liver is the primary organ that does most of the detoxifying work to remove unwanted and unneeded chemicals.

Medical Radiation Hazards December 15, 2009

Filed under: Environmental Toxicity — wellnessaging @ 8:34 PM

The use of high technology diagnosing equipment such as CT (computed tomography) scans and imaging scans are reported to expose a person to higher levels of radiation than an x-ray.

Reza Fazel MD reported from her study in the New England Journal of Medicine in August 2009 that “Imaging procedures are an important source of exposure to ionizing radiation in the United States and can result in high cumulative effective doses of radiation”1.

This means having a diagnostic test done is important but over the years it does have an accumulative effect. Radiation damages cells and for some will cause cancer. Over 80% of these procedures are done on an outpatient basis this study revealed. The ionizing radiation accumulates and increases with advancing age.

Always be your own advocate in regard to tests performed on your body or your child’s. Only you know the complete medical history for yourself or your child. Don’t forget to include dental x-rays, mammograms, and imaging studies. It is all cumulative; it affects the health of cells and their DNA. The body does have innate repair mechanisms and can heal itself – up to a certain point.

Monitoring your health and diagnostic testing throughout life is another important aspect of staying well.

How Safe is Your Drinking Water September 2, 2009

Sunday August 23, 2009 a front page article of the New York Times asked this question: “Just how much week killer is safe in your water glass”. The debate rages on while our water continues to have contaminants from industrial pollution. The Environmental Protection Agency has stated that “current regulations are adequate to protect human health and that atrazine now being found in water are at safe levels. Atrazine is a chemical compound classified as an herbicide used for many years by agriculture and it now finds its way to our drinking water. Some communities have monitored spikes of atrazine at various times associated with high use of herbicides according to the article.

What to do and who to believe. History has an ominous way of repeating itself as the EPA has admitted to “oops – we made a mistake” more than once. Why would a man-made chemical be deemed safe at any level in water? It has already been witnessed that  natural lakes have overgrown algae due to chemical runoff also associated with dying and malformed fish.

Note: Atrazine was banned in the European Union in 2004 because of its
persistent groundwater contamination.

Protect yourself now by drinking purest water that is filtered, use products like Orenda Immune to enhance cellular detoxification, and drink OKI that has high powered anti-oxidants per one ounce. The old saying “an ounce of prevention”………. Is worth more than a pound of cure!

ALKALINE DIET August 17, 2009

There is a buzz about alkaline diets and alkaline water. What is the fuss and is it real? The truth is that keeping the body in a more alkaline state is healthier. Cells are just happier and therefore function better in a more alkaline environment. On a Ph scale of 0-14, an acid state exists when a fluid registers below 7.0. Stomach acid, for example, is around 1-2 pH. In a more ideal state we want the fluids around cells to be above 7.0. All of the blood in circulation is in a very tight alkaline range (7.35-7.45) almost always or your body will die.
In an acidic environment that is below7.0 pH more inflammation is present. Joints feel achy and painful. In very complex interactions of proteins, minerals, ions and enzymes the balance of particles that are dissolved in body fluids influence the pH.
Why is pH important? More research is clearly showing increased cancer rates, heart disease rates and chronic diseases are associated with acid state inside the body. The great news is what we eat can change our alkaline and acid states.
Drink water instead of soda pop and caffeinated beverages. Eat a higher percentage of fruits and vegetables; the by products create an alkaline environment inside the body. Consume smaller amounts of dense protein like meat fish and eggs, reduce all sugary foods. Fact: sugars increase an acid state.
Health is up to you and an alkaline environment is a great step into wellness.

Drinking for Your Health August 10, 2009

DRINKING FOR YOUR HEALTH

What type of liquids do you drink each day? All cells need hydration to function well. Cell activity is defined by the ability to move bio chemicals in and out of each cell. Since each cell is autonomous it needs its own fluids to bathe it outside as well to move waste products from inside each cell. Take for instance a muscle which is actually a compilation of billions of cells clumped together forming a muscle tissue that performs a movement. What if the liquid (soda pop, alcohol or caffeinated drinks) consumed each day contains substances that impede this movement of the chemicals? A problem can ensue over time.

Recently it was reported that a high intake of cola soft drinks actually caused a loss of muscle strength so severe in several cases that some people were hospitalized. When the cola intake was stopped they completely recovered. Research concluded that the chemicals in the cola drink caused a loss of potassium which is needed by muscle cells to function.

Intake of any liquid on a regular basis needs careful scrutiny. Know all the contents of the liquid you are drinking. Symptoms likely will not suddenly appear but rather creep up over years of consumption. What you are drinking may be hazardous to your health.

Drink pure fresh filtered water, preferably not from plastic bottles. The amount of water varies from 4 – 8 cups (8 oz) per day. Climate and activity will vary your intake. The old adage of drinking 8 glasses/day may not always be accurate. See:  http://www.wikihow.com/Drink-More-Water-Every-DayDay

HIDDEN THREATS IN PLASTICS August 7, 2009

HIDDEN THREATS IN PLASTICS

Yet again plastics and their hazards are in the news. In an article in “The Week” a weekly news magazine, it was reported that phthalates (substances added to plastics to increase their flexibility, transparency, durability and longevity) are more harmful than has been revealed. It seems they disrupt hormones in the body. Clearly – not a good thing. A developmental deformity of the genitalia of baby boys is reported on the increase. Endocrine disruptors are responsible for interference of steroid hormones like estrogen and testosterone for example by binding to specific cell receptors. These plastic chemicals often have a very close molecular structure to our own natural hormones and cause a disruption to the normal function and/or growth of cells. In the case of baby boys, the formation of the penis is dependent on testosterone, but the look alike chemical is interfering with nature.

Where are these soft plastics found? They are in baby bottles and toys, water bottles, plastic dishes people microwave their food in, lipsticks and other cosmetics, some pharmaceutical pill coatings. It is most important to know that heat causes increased release of the phthalates.

We cannot depend on our government or the EPA to be our protectors nor can we rely on the food industry for safety. As an individual you must educate yourself and take action for you and your family’s health.
Here are some simple places to start:
• Avoid plastic water bottles. Get a good home water filtration system and use stainless steel or glass containers only to carry around water.
• Never microwave food in plastic – never.
• Purchase only natural cosmetics. Any product you put onto your skin and lips, consider yourself ingesting it. It is going into your bloodstream.
Theo Colburn PhD first wrote about the problem of endocrine disruption more that 15 years ago and has an updated website:

Information on these chemicals are found in scientific journals, books and research.1

TEN AMERICANS

How Safe is the Environment?

There’s a non government watch dog group for chemical safety in America.
Environmental Working Group (EWG) based in Washington DC monitors safety (or the lack of it) of chemicals in our environment. Over the last decade information has been trickling in from various sources about what our bodies are being exposed to daily. Ken Cook president and founder of EWG does research and analysis of our national policy debates dealing with toxic chemicals, pesticides, air and water pollution, and the environmental impacts of modern agriculture
This video (link below) is a compelling and shocking exposure delivered with facts and humor about the state of our exposure.
It is imperative to understand the comprehensive solutions to this serious toxic soup we now find ourselves in. As a health care practitioner I recommend Orenda products with unique formulas that assist in detoxifying at the cellular level and supporting healthy cell function. The cell is truly where health begins and ends. Everyone who owns a computer and does internet searches would be foolish to do so without a comprehensive anti-viral program for protection. The same idea applies to the body. What are you doing to protect and deal with toxic chemical exposures on the cellular level? Even if you do not have an illness it does NOT mean you are safe and healthy.

Being in Nature July 1, 2009

Filed under: Environmental Toxicity — wellnessaging @ 10:04 PM

Welcome to Wellness Aging’s  blog launch. We endeavor to offer education and tips to stay healthy in the aging journey.

Today’s tip comes from nature – the greatest healer of all. Taken for granted in this fast pace world being in nature is a great reminder to heed.

“Naturopathic Doctor News and Review” June 2009 contains an article worth mentioning. Could it true that a simple remedy to some of society’s ills can helped by just being in “nature”?  The article’s title “Natural Medicine: The healing effects of exposure to nature.”1 by Dr. Kurt Beil reveals the obvious.

The first example sites a study with college students and their performance on cognitive tests. They performed significantly better in a classroom with a park view rather than a parking lot view. No surprise there.

This next study is the best:

Children diagnosed with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) were monitored and assessed after playing in one of three settings. 1) Indoor playground. 2) a “built” outdoor playground with asphalt and no greenery, 3) an outdoor playground with grass and trees.

You guessed it – the green and trees helped improve their symptoms significantly.

We innately know how good it feels to be in natural settings and it really helps our general wellbeing.

Sometimes we miss the obvious. To keep healthy and strong there are a lot of remedies, and the best medicine may be just taking the time to be in natural settings. The greener the better. Old family doctors would advise their patient to go the mountains for a rest or reside by the sea to become well.

Where is your nature spot?  Carve out your place and time regularly and you do not need a doctor’s order.
